Artist Statement
I am a Furniture Designer and Maker who uses wood and steel to create modern/contemporary works inspired by Art History. I first became interested in furniture while studying the Arts and Crafts Movement. I was very intrigued in the way art expanded during that time, moving away from the Classical, and accepting other forms of art. This was something that influenced all of my art from then on. The acknowledgement that more than just the traditional fine arts was being accepted and expanded on by artist was truly amazing. Crafts such as making wallpaper, home accessories, and furniture became more detailed and influential to people and homes. Now these kinds of art are used to express one's individuality and personal aesthetic, which makes the creation of these arts even more inspiring. Furniture has progressed a lot since this period, such as art deco and bauhaus, and I believe it’s important to implement past concepts into contemporary designs. Now I create all my furniture to fit my aesthetic, so that it would be a piece that I would want in my own home, and be proud to make. When viewing my art I want others to feel like they are looking at something both from the past and the present. I want them to being excited and intrigued in this uncommonly viewed art type, and for the product and concepts behind them. I have tried to do this by using classical materials such as bare wood and steel, to look like an older piece of furniture, or by using bright colors to resemble a time closer to the mid-century modern, all the while implementing a contemporary design created to showcase its convenience and style.
